Course Summary

Thiothixene is a typical antipsychotic that has a labeled use for the treatment of patients who have schizophrenia and is used off-label for the treatment of agitation and psychosis caused by dementia. Thiothixene belongs to the class of drugs known as thioxanthenes with anticholinergic properties and was introduced into the market in 1967 under the trade name Navane and was reported by Leung (2015) to be more potent than chlorpromazine. The use of thiothixene has significantly declined in recent decades with the advent of the newer atypical antipsychotics however continues to be manufactured and used in many countries worldwide.
