Alabama Advanced Practice Nurse CEU Requirements
All Alabama advanced practice nurses, (APRNs) are required to complete twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle, including 6-hours of pharmacology. Alabama APRN License Renewal Requirements
All advanced practice nurses licensed in Alabama must complete 24 hours of continuing education each license renewal period. Eighteen of the twenty-four hours of continuing education are elective and 6 hours are required in pharmacology. In addition, there is a 4-hour, 1-time requirement for the first renewal cycle, meaning you can choose the topics that are relevant to your nursing practice and interests to meet your continuing education requirements. All our courses are ANCC accredited and will count towards your 24-hour requirement.

When is the deadline for Advanced Practice Nurse re-licensure in Alabama?
The license period is for two years based upon the renewal cycle of the license. Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse renewal is every even numbered year by the end of the calendar year (12/31).
Are there any mandatory continuing education requirements for Alabama Advanced Practice Nurses?
Yes, Advanced Practice Nurses are required to take 6 hours of pharmacology continuing education and there is a 1-time requirement for all Alabama nurses to take a 4-hour mandatory class that is available through the Alabama Board of Nursing web site, www.abn.alabama.gov. All other continuing education in subsequent renewal cycles are electives.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
