CE Requirements for Virginia Nursing License Renewal
Virginia has a continued competency requirement. The continuing competency requirement may be satisfied by: providing current specialty certification by a national certifying organization, as defined in 18VAC90-19-10; completion of a minimum of three credit hours of post-licensure academic education relevant to nursing practice, offered by a regionally accredited college or university; taking a board-approved refresher course in nursing; completing a nursing-related, evidence-based practice project or research study; completing a publication as the author or co-author during a renewal cycle; teaching or developing a nursing-related course resulting in no less than three semester hours of college credit, a 15-week course, or specialty certification; teaching or developing nursing-related continuing education courses for up to 30 contact hours; completing fifteen contact hours of workshops, seminars, conferences, or courses relevant to the practice of nursing and 640 hours of active practice as a nurse; or thirty contact hours of workshops, seminars, conferences, or courses relevant to the practice of nursing. APRNs are required to hold current professional certification in the area of specialty practice from one of the certifying agencies designated in 18VAC90-30-90 or complete at least 40 hours of continuing education in the area of specialty practice approved by one of the certifying agencies designated in 18VAC90-30-90 or approved by Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) of the American Medical Association as a Category I Continuing Medical Education (CME) course. If you have prescriptive authority, then an additional 8 hours pertaining to pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutics is required.

Are there continuing education requirements for Virginia nurses?
Yes, but it is called a continuing competency requirement. You can satisfy this requirement with fifteen (15) or thirty (30) hours of continuing education, depending on how many active practice hours you have completed, or any of the other ways mentioned previously.
When is the nurse re-licensure deadline for Virginia nurses?
Virginia licenses expire every 2 years. If you were born in an even-numbered year, then your license expires at the end of your birth month every even-numbered year. If you were born in an odd-numbered year, then your license expires at the end of your birth month every odd-numbered year.
Are there any mandatory continuing education requirements for Virginia nurses?
