Illinois APRN License Renewal Requirements
All nurses licensed in the state of Illinois must complete continuing education each 2-year license renewal period. Illinois APRNs must complete eighty (80) hours of continuing education, which includes 20 hours of pharmacotherapeutics, including 10 hours in opioid prescribing or substance abuse education. Elective hours can be any courses the licensee wants, including courses relevant to the licensee’s nursing practice or interests. When is the nurse re-licensure deadline for Illinois Advanced Practice Registered Nurses?
Illinois APRNs must renew their license by May 31st of even-numbered years.
Are there any mandatory continuing education requirements for Illinois Advanced Practice Registered Nurses?
Yes, for the May 31, 2024, license period, Nurses who provide services to patients 26 years of age and older must complete a 1-hour course on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Nurses must also complete a 1-hour course on the prevention of sexual harassment and a 1-hour course on implicit bias.
Persons required to report child abuse or child neglect must complete an initial mandated reporter training within 3 months of their date of engagement in a professional or official capacity as a mandated reporter, or within the time frame of any other applicable State law that governs training requirements for a specific profession, and at least every 3 years thereafter. This child abuse and neglect training is provided by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
Also, beginning January 1st, 2025, nurses must complete a 1-hour course on cultural competency and licensed prescribers of controlled substances must complete a 1-hour course on safe prescribing of opioids.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
