Course Summary

Ebola virus is a highly virulent virus that can cause Ebola virus disease, a condition associated with a high fatality rate. Significant outbreaks of this disease have occurred only in Africa, but in 2014 there were several confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease in the United States. Because Ebola virus is highly contagious, and these infections are so dangerous, health professionals should understand how the disease is transmitted and be able to recognize patients who are likely to have Ebola virus disease. Prevention of person-to-person transmission and protection from Ebola virus infection is an important part of the health clinician’s role in terms of educating the public and in the delivery of patient care.
