Course Summary

Duloxetine is an antidepressant that acts as a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It has labeled uses for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder. Renal function is important in patients taking duloxetine because it is primarily excreted by the kidneys. In addition, the prescribing information states that the use of duloxetine should be avoided if a patient has cirrhosis or chronic hepatic disease since duloxetine may cause liver damage or exacerbate pre-existing liver disease. Since duloxetine is an antidepressant, there may be an increase in the risk of suicidal behavior and ideation in children, adolescents, and young adults with certain psychiatric disorders.
