Course Summary

Health professionals need to be able to differentiate between refractory psychosis and psychosis caused or exacerbated by underlying medical conditions, and to encourage treatments that may be more impactful on the refractory patient. Increasing nursing knowledge to appropriately assess those with a refractory mood disorder and psychosis is essential to successful treatment planning, which may include switching or combining psychotropic medications and electroconvulsive therapy for severe treatment resistant cases; and, being informed of legal options to proceed along a course of care when the patient is unable to competently choose. The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with knowledge to identify common risk factors of a refractory mood disorder and psychosis and to recommend needed options for treatment, which may include changes in medication management and electroconvulsive therapy, as well as assisting patients identify their wishes for psychiatric advance directives.
