Course Summary

Droperidol is a butyrophenone, typical antipsychotic and dopamine receptor antagonist that works in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. The labelled use of droperidol is for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in surgical patients. Off-label use of droperidol is for the treatment of patients who have acute, undifferentiated agitation. There are no specific dosing recommendations for the use of droperidol in special cases, such as geriatric patients, or for patients with hepatic or renal impairment. In elderly patients who receive antipsychotics for the treatment of dementia-related psychosis, droperidol should be used with caution or avoided because of an increased risk for death. Researchers and clinicians have concluded that droperidol in low doses is safe, and there are professional position statements that support clinicians in the use of droperidol.
