Course Summary

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder that is typically diagnosed during childhood and adolescence; however, it can be diagnosed in individuals at any age. Children with ADHD will often have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, being overly active, and will often act without thinking about the consequences. When ADHD is seen in adulthood, it is usually characterized more by a lack of focus rather than impulsivity and hyperactivity, which is more prominent in children. Adult ADHD may be more recognizable and observable as adult responsibilities increase. The adult with ADHD may be unable to organize, concentrate, and function, which impedes the person's cognitive skills. New ADHD treatments continue to be raised in the literature, including the methylphenidate extended-release capsule that is taken at bedtime. This ADHD treatment may be used to treat children aged six and older, adolescents, and adults.
