Course Summary
Although alcoholism and addiction are normally thought of as diseases that affect younger patients, substance abuse is a growing problem for the elderly. A shrinking social support network combined with significant losses can lead to depression, which makes elderly patients vulnerable to abusing substances that may temporarily improve their mood. The natural aging process increases the negative physical and emotional impact of substance abuse while at the same time making it harder for health professionals to diagnose. Every patient is valuable, and identifying best practice to diagnose and treat addiction in the elderly is raised.
